Upcoming events

Open activities this term.

The change of ownership delayed Mamaloa's licence. Since early September we have been able to start operating: this term (September–December 2026) we are not caring for a group of children, and we are opening the space with morning and afternoon activities so families can get to know the project. A new group starts in January 2027, with several families already confirmed.

The Soul of Mamaloa

A lighthouse to educate from, beyond any single method.

Mamaloa was born from the meeting of two educators who, amid the tides, felt the need to raise a lighthouse. A place to educate not from a method, but from a way of being and relating.

"Our educational project is built on free movement and sensoriomotor experience guided by each child's own interest and rhythm. We know this is only possible thanks to the safe environment we build together with families and educators."

Since 2026, Zayda has been the pedagogical director, carrying the same essence with fresh energy: 15 years of experience, two children of her own, and the same deep commitment to living education and absolute respect.

We embrace, appreciate and nourish ourselves through the commitment and complicity of every family.

Respectful Parenting · Free Education

"Learning must pass through the head, the heart and the hands."
— Pestalozzi

🧸

Free Play

The foundation of learning. Each child plays in their own way, at the pace their organism needs. They repeat, explore, create. Motor skills, coordination and social abilities emerge from here.

🌱

Autonomy

In the first three years, the body learns at an astonishing pace. The richer the environment, the more natural the path to autonomy. Children make free choices that make them feel capable.

🧠

Self-knowledge

Knowing one's own body, capabilities and limits. Discovering how far they are ready to climb, run or explore. The adult accompanies without rushing the process.

⚖️

Self-regulation

The internal connection with the body and one's own sensations. Educators express things in words, carefully deciphering what is happening and helping each child give it a place.

The Director

Zayda: new energy, same soul.

Hi! I'm Zayda. I was born in El Salvador 37 years ago and have been living in Barcelona since I was 10. Today I open my heart to tell you what is behind Mamaloa.

More than 15 years ago I began my path as an early childhood educator, but my true transformation came with my children. My first maternity, 10 years ago, introduced me to respectful parenting, where I could explore different areas of accompaniment through training. My second, 3 years ago, gave me the gift of clarity: to dream of a project of my own.

"Now it is possible thanks to Mamaloa — where we don't just care for children, we accompany them from absolute respect for their own rhythm and conscious presence."

I am convinced that the first years are the foundation of adult life, and my mission is for every child to feel seen, valued and free to develop in all their areas.

The project founded by Íngrid and Mireia lives on: same vocation, same ratio, same community. Because the essence doesn't change — it grows. ❤️

Why the Ratio Changes Everything

7 children. 1 educator. Every day.

When there are fewer children per educator, each child is truly seen, heard and understood. It's not a luxury — it's the minimum they deserve.

Every child is seen every day

"Trying to teach a child something they can learn by themselves is not only useless, but harmful." — Emmi Pikler

🫶

Real Bond

An authentic relationship between child and educator, built every day.

🔇

Calm

Less noise, less stress. Room for silence and deep concentration.

The Space

Every corner, designed with childhood in mind.

Natural materials, wood, natural light and spaces that invite free movement. The inner courtyard connects with the life of the neighbourhood.

A Day at Mamaloa

A living rhythm, not a rigid timetable.

Every morning begins with a welcoming ritual. Every afternoon closes with the warmth of La Foguera. In between is free exploration and discovery.

Our way of being and relating

🤸

Sensoriomotor Play

From the first months, children respond to visual, sound and touch stimuli. Then comes sensoriomotor play: jumping, running, climbing. And later symbolic play, around 2.5–3 years: "let's pretend…"

🌿

Respectful Settling-in

A child cannot explore if their alert system is activated. At Mamaloa, the presence of a secure figure is non-negotiable during the first weeks. First the space, then the group, then the rhythms, then the bond.

🤝

Families as Part of the Project

We know Mamaloa is only possible with families. Pedagogical gatherings whenever the team sees the need, two individual meetings per year, and direct, honest, close communication. We embrace your complicity.

📚

Pedagogical References

The Settling-in Process

Four weeks to build trust.

At Mamaloa, settling in is not a formality. It is a living process shaped by the child's age, attachment style, the family's concerns and each family's reality. We ask for a minimum availability of 4 weeks, with flexibility.

"The child needs to look back and see that their safe harbour is still there while they venture to explore the space."

1

Discovering the space

The space stops feeling threatening and becomes familiar territory.

2

Meeting the group

We deeply respect the observer role. A child may spend days watching others play from a parent's lap.

3

Understanding the rhythms

Knowing what comes next reduces anxiety. The child integrates daily rituals organically, with the family present.

4

Bond with the educator

The last and most delicate step. The educator does not replace anyone — they become a secondary attachment figure when the child seeks them out by their own initiative.

"True freedom is only possible within clear limits that respect both the needs of the child and those of the adult." — Rebeca Wild

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything families want to know

Yes. At Mamaloa, enrolment is open all year round, as long as places are available and the 7:1 ratio can be respected. There is no need to wait until September. Whether a family joins in January, March or any other point in the school year, the settling-in process is carried out with the same care and support as at the start of the year. Mid-year joining is a normal part of Mamaloa: many families arrive at any time of year. The best way to find out whether a place is available is to contact Zayda directly.
Not right now. The change of ownership delayed Mamaloa's licence, and since early September 2026 we have been able to start operating. So from September to December 2026 we are not caring for a group of children: we are using the space in Gràcia (Barcelona) for morning and afternoon activities so families can get to know the project. In January 2027 we open a new group for children from crawling age (7-8 months) to 3 years, with several families already confirmed. If you are interested in a place, talk to Zayda.
Mamaloa works with a ratio of 7 children per educator. This is the most distinctive feature of the project: it enables individualised support, a real bond and a calm environment that is simply not possible in conventional nurseries — where ratios can reach 20 children per adult. The group is made up of a maximum of 15 families per school year.
Mamaloa welcomes children from the time they start crawling, around 7-8 months, up to 3 years old. Joining is gradual and respectful, with a minimum of 4 weeks of settling-in with a family member present.
Mamaloa is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 16:30, and each family chooses the schedule it needs, with a fee to match: mornings (9:00–12:00), standard (9:00–15:00) or full day (9:00–16:30). There is also an early care service from 8:30 to 9:00 at an extra cost. The educators will recommend a schedule based on each child's stage and development, but the decision is the family's. If you are unsure which schedule suits you, just ask us openly.
Prices are approximate and are confirmed at the meeting at the start of the school year. Full day (9:00–16:30): around €500 per month. Standard (9:00–15:00): around €420 per month. Mornings (9:00–12:00): around €320 per month, to be confirmed. Early care from 8:30 to 9:00: around €30 per month extra. Lunch is paid separately.
The school year is paid in 12 instalments. The first one is the enrolment fee: it is the same amount as a monthly fee, it reserves the place, it includes all the teaching materials, and it means the final August does not have to be paid. We explain this openly for transparency: we know it can seem strange to pay for August when the centre is closed, but that money covers the rent, the educators' salaries and the materials for the whole year. It could be spread across the school year, but it would work out more expensive, and in our experience this way is better. Lunch is not charged in August. If you have any questions, just ask.
There are two options. Families can bring their child's lunch every day, or sign up for the menu from a local organic kitchen that delivers it to Mamaloa, paid separately from the monthly fee. The menu is fixed; if you have questions or specific needs, talk to the team.
Mamaloa is rooted in respectful parenting and free education. It is not strictly a Montessori school, but a living education project drawing on multiple references: Emmi Pikler (authentic movement and autonomy), Rebeca Wild (limits and freedom), Maria Montessori, Rousseau and Evânia Reichert (emotional expression). At the core is free play, autonomy, self-knowledge and self-regulation within a safe environment.
Yes. At Mamaloa, the presence of a secure attachment figure is non-negotiable at the start of the process. We ask for a minimum availability of 4 weeks, with flexibility depending on each case. Settling in happens in 4 progressive phases: first the child gets to know the space, then the group, then the daily rhythms, and finally the bond with the educator is built. We never sneak out: we are committed to absolute honesty with children.
During the first term (September–December 2026), Mamaloa in Gràcia offers morning and afternoon activities: sensory play, baby space, psychomotor play, family acrobatics and theatre, a play and coworking space, workshops, and free play on Saturdays, for ages from 4 months to 6 years depending on the activity. Every activity is booked by signing up to its event in the calendar on this website, including the first class of regular activities. The schedule may change; if you have any questions, message us on WhatsApp.
Mamaloa is located at Carrer del Torrent de l'Olla 161, in the Gràcia neighbourhood of Barcelona (postcode 08012). It is easily accessible from Gràcia, Vila de Gràcia, El Coll, Vallcarca, Camp d'en Grassot and North Eixample. Well connected by metro (Fontana, Joanic) and bus.
Mamaloa is a private educational project run by the company MAMALOA SL. It does not receive public funding and is not a public or state-subsidised nursery. Since February 2026, the pedagogical and management direction has been led by Zayda, who acquired the company while preserving the essence of the original project, created between 2021 and 2022 by Íngrid and Mireia. All project costs are covered transparently through family fees.
